Raising the flag in honour of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Municipality of Kincardine mayor Ken Craig, along with Kincardine councillors, raised the Survivor Flag on Monday, Sept. 23 at the Kincardine library. The flag will fly in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day dedicated to recognizing the injustices faced by Indigenous peoples in Canada. Sept. 30 also coincides with Orange Shirt Day, an Indigenous-led grassroots initiative to commemorate and honour both the children who survived Indian Residential Schools and remember those who did not. Information, posters and stickers can be picked up at the Kincardine Davidson Centre, the Municipal Administration Centre and the Welcome Centre all month. The Survivors’ Flag will fly at both the Kincardine library and Tiverton’s Station 11 until Oct. 1. The community is encouraged to wear orange on Monday, Sept. 30 as an expression of remembrance.
