JEAN YORK
Jean Elizabeth York of Kincardine and a veteran of the Second World War passed away on Friday, Jan. 11, 2019, at the age of 92.
Jean was born in Binfield, England, on July 1, 1926, to Joseph Henry Heywood and Fanny Elizabeth Peart. Jean’s family immigrated to Canada in 1927. Her father served in the First World War for Britain, and Jean joined her brothers Dennis and Roy in the Canadian military in the Second World War. Jean was always proud of having been in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC).
At the end of the war, Jean married Gordon Collins and had two sons – Michael (Sharron), who predeceased her, and Larry (Colleen) of Kingston.
She later married Andrew York, who served on the HMCS Kincardine.
Jean worked several years at Kraft manufacturing. When Andy died in 1997, Jean decided to move from St. Catharines to Kincardine where she and Andy had previously enjoyed military reunions.
She is survived by her grandson Larry Jr., granddaughter Tracy, grandson Chris Collins and sister Carol (Harold) Tipler. She is also survived by several great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her siblings Renee, Dennis, Roy, Joan and Marguerite.
A Royal Canadian Legion service was held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019, at the Davey-Linklater Funeral Home.
