Obituary – Sharon Cox

SHARON COX

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Sharon Lilian Cox (née Spalding) at Trillium Court, on Jan. 1, 2025. She was 85 years old.
Sharon was born in Vancouver, B.C. on Sept. 13,1939, to the late Jack Kilburn Spalding and Eleanor Mabel Spalding (née Goostrey).
She was predeceased by her son Paul Douglas Cox, brothers-in-law Ray Rathwell and Cliff Gussie and parents-in-law Roxanna and Bill Cox.
The family moved to Swan River, Manitoba in 1952 where she met and married Lee Cox, her husband of 64 years.
Sharon became a teacher, first teaching in Swan River, Manitoba. As Sharon and Lee started their family, she took a break from teaching to concentrate on her growing family, which included fostering children along with raising their own. Having moved to Kirkland Lake during this time, she later returned to teaching with a focus on special needs children and later English as a second language.
Sharon was a dedicated member of the Eastern Star, serving in many offices as well as being appointed Grand Esther in 1998-99. She served with the United Church Women (UCW). These ventures are where Sharon flourished with her outgoing personality and dedication to ensuring that no one should ever be left out.
Once the kids were grown, Sharon and Lee moved to Kincardine where they enjoyed round and square dancing along with their friends Dan and Rhetha Roy. She loved cross-country skiing. She was fond of being a caregiver to children and opening their home to those in need. She spent time visiting church members in hospital and in long-term care.
Sharon was a loving mother of Jon Cox (Maureen Denford-Cox) of Thunder Bay, Steve Cox (Christina Deighton) of Kirkland Lake, Alan Cox (Lisa Cox – née Cameron) of Kanata and Sharilee Cox-Arseneault (Chuck Arseneault) of Milton.
She will be dearly missed by her eight grandchildren along with five great-grandchildren: Cassandra Weidner (Zachary) and their children Everet and Lillian – daughter of Jon Cox; Ashton Cox (Janelle Jacques) and their son Gunnar, Ryleigh Cox (Stephanie Aitchison) – sons of Steve Cox; Rebecca Moussette (Taylor) and their daughters Maeve and Rory, Paul Cameron Cox, Katelyn Cox (Damian Richards) – children of Alan Cox; Zachary Hoehle (Sascha Scherba), Madison Arseneault – children of Sharilee Cox-Arseneault.
Sharon is also survived by her sister Norie Rathwell, brother Wes Spalding, her sister-in-law Kay Gussie and brother-in-law Jim Cox (Joan), as well as many nieces and nephews and cousins.
The Cox family would like to thank the many staff members at Trillium Court, with a special mention to Jessica Haldenby RPN and Sueme Forrester RN, whose kind and compassionate care have meant so much over the last year.
A memorial service to honour Sharon’s life will be held at the Kincardine United Church (721 Princes Street) at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 4, 2025.
Final resting place: Kincardine Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Alzheimer Society of Grey Bruce or a charity of your choice would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
