Obituary – Kathryn Gilchrist

KATHRYN McFADYEN GILCHRIST
Sept. 22, 1937 – Oct. 4, 2024

Kathryn McFadyen Gilchrist passed away peacefully on Oct. 4, 2024 at Extendicare York in Sudbury at the age of 87.
Daughter of the late Tom and Mary Gilchrist, she was born and raised on the family farm on the 2nd of Bruce. Kathryn will be dearly missed by loving family and friends both near and far.
Upon graduating from Kincardine High School, Kathryn attended Stratford Teachers’ College. Her first position was in a one-room schoolhouse in Listowel teaching grades 1-8. She went on to teach in Iroquois Falls and later settled in Sudbury, where she taught at several elementary schools. She particularly loved her years at the Children’s Treatment Centre. The privilege to teach others was always dear to her heart and many a student will fondly recall what a gifted teacher she was.
Kathryn enjoyed a full retirement, allowing her to travel, bike, hike, paddle and ski throughout the world. She spent summers at her haven, her cottage on beloved Fagan Lake. There she enjoyed the peaceful serenity of being in nature, which she generously shared with family and friends.
A celebration of her life was held in Sudbury on Oct. 20, 2024.
A graveside service will take place at Purdy Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Oct. 26, 2024, with a luncheon to follow at Knox Presbyterian Church in Tiverton.
Memorial donations may be made in her name to a charity of your choice or to the Children’s Treatment Centre Summer Camp (https://hsnsudbury.ca.en/Services-and-Specialties/NEO-Kids-and-Family-Program/Childrens-Treatment-Centre) or the Maison McCulloch Hospice Foundation (https://maisonsudburyhospice.org/donate).
