Obituary – Denis Ross

DENIS ROSS

Denis Alexander Ross of Kincardine passed away peacefully at Elgin Abbey in Chesley on June 19, 2021, at the age of 87. His wife Shirley and son Donald were by his side.
Denis was born in Edmonton, Alberta on Oct. 17, 1933. His father was born in Devils Lake, North Dakota and his grandfather came from Scotland in 1811.
His first wife, Dorothy (McConnell), died of cancer after 36 years of marriage.
He is survived by three children: Nancy (Jeff Kennedy) of Napanee, Donald (Ida) of Mississauga, and Jennifer (the late John Christakos) of Sudbury; as well as eight grandchildren.
Denis married Shirley Harris in 1994. He is also greatly missed by her sons, Ronald and Douglas, both of Ottawa.
After 19 years in oil and gas production (both in B.C. and Alberta), he came to Ontario to work for Ontario Power Generation. He was a shift supervisor for 22 years at the heavy water plant. Shirley took an early retirement in 1995. At that time, they bought their first RV, travelling for six months of each year for 22 years – all over the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Their three motorhomes were also his babies.
His Scottish heritage continued on, becoming a member in Clan Ross. He was always proud to wear his “Hunting Ross” kilt. Denis was actively involved with the Kincardine United Church, the Royal Canadian Legion (he was a member of the colour party for a few years), Kincardine Lawn Bowling, Kincardine Golf and Country Club, and was the founding member of the Kincardine Probus Club. Wood carving remained his hobby at home. Though all the years of travel, he and Shirley had their faithful dogs at their side and they greatly loved their constant companions, “Bear” and “Coco”.
In June of 2017, Denis went to Tiverton Park Manor. In September of 2019, he moved to Elgin Abbey in Chesley. Denis always loved a good laugh, but didn’t like a joke being played on him!
Following his wishes, cremation has taken place. A private service will be held at the Kincardine Cemetery. Rest in Peace.
Donations to a charity of your own choice would be greatly appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the MacKenzie & McCreath Funeral Home in Ripley. Condolences may be made online at mackenzieandmccreath.com.
