DAVID SCHMALZ

David Lorne Schmalz passed away peacefully at Guelph General Hospital on Sunday, May 22, 2022, at the age of 80.
Cherished husband of the late Christina (née Wilson) Schmalz (2011).
Beloved father of Christian Schmalz of Windsor, Ontario.
Brother of Linda Chenoweth (Craig).
Predeceased by his parents Lorne and Rita (née Lauber) Schmalz.
The Schmalz family moved to Walkerton in September 1939, where they took over The Hartley House. David worked there as a kid. He returned after earning a degree at Michigan State University and worked at the Hartley House another 20 years.
The Michigan State spirit was a part of who David was, especially when the Spartans beat Michigan or Ohio state. David always said if cut he would bleed green and white.
In 1993, David’s adventures led him into the financial and life insurance industries, where he learned the ropes at Met Life, Mutual Life and the Hepcoe Credit Union, before venturing out on his own. These years were a great source of joy for David.
A life-long commitment to AA was one of David’s greatest accomplishments and he helped numerous others during these times.
A music man until the end, David will be greatly missed by many incredible people who brightened his days, especially visits with his son Christian.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. Anthony’s of Padua Roman Catholic Church in Kincardine at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 9, 2022. Reception to follow at the Best Western, Kincardine.
Memorial donations to Alcoholics Anonymous – Central West, the Lung Association or Grey Bruce Animal Shelter would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
