How one family continues to give women’s sports a fighting chance

She was active, smart, driven and focused. Teacher. Coach. Mentor. And newlywed. Life was falling into place, but soon she would be in for the fight of her life. A dozen years have passed since Leslie Petter lost that fight to cancer. But it was a life well lived, one that touched the lives of countless people, both through teaching, coaching and while playing
varsity basketball at Western University.

The Petter family continues to advocate, not only for cancer research and their daughter, but to shine a brighter light on women’s sports, particularly basketball. Since 2011, Leslie’s father, Ted and his family have been behind a memorial basketball funding event, this year to be held at Medway High School in Arva, where Leslie was both teacher and coach. The 2023 Leslie Petter Memorial Game will feature the junior game at 2:30 and the senior girls play at 4 p.m. Western’s Varsity Women’s team will face St. Clair College, and all the games will be played in the gymnasium that bears Leslie’s name.
