Kincardine women’s soccer

The Kincardine women’s soccer team played their third league game of their eight-game Lakeshore League season on Sunday afternoon at the Davidson Centre against Saugeen Shores. Despite having the vast majority of possession, and hitting the frame of the goal four times, the home team ended up on the losing side of a 1-0 score. Right from the getgo, Kincardine was dominant and created some clear-cut chances. Jess Small thumped the post with a powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area. Kiley Snow created some space and sent in a cross right through the visitors’six yard box that Jess Small couldn’t quite convert. Then Lisa Holtby had a long shot well-saved by their keeper. A minute later, however, the SSUFC team was in front when a shot from the right side of the penalty area found the far corner of the ne; Sara Jones got a strong hand to it but couldn’t keep the shot out. The home team continued to dominate but couldn’t find a way past the visiting goalie, who had a great game, excelling from a close-range shot by midfielder Kiley Snow, and the half finished at 0-1. It was more of the same as the second half got underway. The ball hit the crossbar from an Alyssa McAllister corner. Jess Small hit the post again, and time after time the home team efforts were thwarted by excellent goalkeeping, the woodwork and missed opportunities. Keeper Sara Jones kept the home team in the game when she tipped a low drive round the post to keep it to a one-goal margin. Centre backs Claudia Di Castri and Christina Pym were really strong all game but this was a real team effort and all the players deserve full credit. Sadly, at full-time came the scoreremained unchanged. The Kincardine women’s team now sits with an 0-3 record, but this is a brand-new team and there are real signs of progress and improvement. That progress will be challenged next week when Kincardine travels to play a strong Owen Sound team next Sunday at 7 p.m.
