Kincardine applies for intervener status at upcoming Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission hearings

By Pauline Kerr
The Municipality of Kincardine is applying for intervener status at the public hearing by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission scheduled for Nov. 25 and 26.
The commission has received an application from Canadian Nuclear Laboratories Limited to amend its waste facility decommissioning licence for the Douglas Point Waste Facility. The purpose of the amendment is to begin active decommissioning at the facility.
The DPWF includes the former Douglas Point 200-megawatt CANDU reactor and associated buildings situated on the Bruce Power site in Tiverton.
If approved, the amendment would allow for the first stage of active decommissioning including the removal of non-radioactive construction waste and the teardown of non-nuclear facilities.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the public hearing had been postponed from Aug. 19 and 20.
Requests have gone out for anyone with expertise or information about this facility, who can help the commission make an informed decision, to apply for intervener status by the Oct. 26 deadline.
Mayor Anne Eadie said she’s concerned about the non-radioactive waste that will be going into the Kincardine landfill, including a substantial amount of asbestos. She said she’d like more information about it.
The hearing will be held via electronic means.
