KINCARDINE-WALKERTON – The last shot has been drained and the winner has been crowned, as Kincardine District Senior School served as a worthy co-host of the 2022 Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) girls’ ‘A’ basketball provincial championship on Nov. 24-26.
Serving as the secondary site to Walkerton District Community School, Kincardine hosted regional winners from across the province Thursday to Saturday last week, including the championship semifinal between Breslau’s Woodland Christian High School and Belleville’s Nicholson Catholic College on Nov. 26.
No. 2-seeded Nicholson would advance to the final later in the day in Walkerton versus fourth-ranked St. Mary Catholic High School from Brockville, with St. Mary ultimately claiming a 52-44 victory and the OFSAA title. Guard/forward Grace Kelley led all scorers with 20 points for the Crusaders, while Evelynn Shakell had 14 points for Nicholson.
Locally, both Walkerton DCS (gaining entry into the tournament as the primary host site) and F.E. Madill Secondary School in Wingham (WOSSAA champion) finished as consolation semifinalists. Both teams went 1-3 overall.
