Canada and the Battle of Vimy Ridge

Under blue skies and warm temperatures, members of the Kincardine branch of the Royal Canadian Legion
raised Canadian and Legion flags, before lowering them to half-mast, in recognition of the 80th Anniversary of
Vimy Ridge on April 9. It was 1917, during the First World War, when the Canadian Corps received orders to
attack Vimy Ridge, a German defensive position in France. Between April 9 and 12, Canadian troops attacked
the Ridge and succeeded in capturing the position. More than 10,500 Canadian troops were killed or wounded
in the assault. The Vimy Memorial was unveiled in 1936, which reads “The grandest tribute we could offer to
Canadian soldiers is to affirm that their sacrifices have contributed to the introduction into our civilization of
its highest modern conception – that of universal Peace founded on recognition of the basic right of people to
